Preparing The Canvas

Today will be talking about the steps, products and benefits of a daily skin routine for cleaning, hydrating and freshening up your face.

First thing you need to do is figure out what cleanser is the right one for your skin type. There are four different skin types and also a combination of them (combination skin)

Dry Skin: Appears flaky (dry) and slightly rough

Oily Skin: Shiny/ slightly Greasy (oily skin that tends to break outs or acne.)

Sensitive Skin: Red and irritated/ sometimes flaky

Normal Skin: Smooth texture, even in Colour and texture, no obvious blemishes or spots, healthy complexion.

Step One

Picking the right cleanser that will work well on your skin

Dry Skin: pick a cleanser with a creamy formula with moisturising ingredients. Lets say for example you pick a general foam based cleanser it will most likely dry out your skin, creating irritation and a more flaky texture.

Product suggestions:

  • Nivea Daily Essentials Gentle Cleansing Cream Wash.
  • Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Cleansing Balm.
  • Glow Lab Crème Cleanser.
  • Simple – Kind Skin Cleansing Oil Hydrating.

Oily skin: If your skin is more on the oily side pick a cleanser that’s has a formula that is oil free.

Product suggestions:

  • Neutrigena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser.
  • Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser.
  • Glow Lab – Gel Cleanser.
  • Biore – Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser.

Sensitive Skin: Using a cleanser that has perfume in it can create more irritation on the skin and redness. So use a cleanser that hasn’t got perfume in it to avoid irritation.

Product suggestions:

  • Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Cleansing Balm.
  • Jojoba Company – Jojoba Bead Facial Cleanser
  • Simple – Kind Skin Cleansing Oil Hydrating.

“Normal” Skin: If you have “normal” skin you have more free range in this, it’s more about finding a cleanser that you like and works well for you.

Step Two

Toner! Why use toner?

Toner helps with:

  • Shrinks pores
  • Restores your skins pH balance
  • Adds a layer of protection
  • Refreshes the skin
  • Soothes the skin
  • Helps remove access oil or dirt left on your skin that your cleanser might have missed

Toner is an important step for people with oily or acne prone skin. It’s also great especially if you’ve been wearing make up all day and after cleansing adding an extra refreshment for your skin.

Product suggestions:

  • Burts Bees- Brightening Refining Tonic
  • SUKIN – Hydrating Mist Toner
  • Simple- Kind To Skin Facial Toner Soothing

Step Three

Serum/ Facial Oil

(Optional step…. But beneficial step)

Personally its important step to the routine, I can tell a difference within my skin when I use it and when I don’t.

What are the benefits of using a serum?

Compared to a cleanser or moisturiser, serums actually contain a higher percentage of active ingredients within their formulas. On average a cleanser or moisturiser contains a percentage of around 5%-10% active ingredients within their formulas compared to a serum, which contains around 70%! Active ingredients within the formulas.

Serums are great especially if you have more sensitive skin or are prone to getting break outs and/or acne. The serums contain peptides, stem cells, vitamins and other beneficial minerals that are fantastic for your skin and the serums wont just sit on the top layer of your skin, it will really seep into the deeper layers of your skin and will help with evening out your skin tone, minimising fine lines and brightening the skin over time.

Some people might feel putting a serum on their skin will block their pores and make them breakout, but it actually has the opposite effect.

I know it might sound odd but hear me out, if you don’t use a serum or something to moisturise your skin, the glands within your skin actually will start over producing oil to try and compensate for the fact your skin is extremely dry hence why if you’re someone who has an oily skin texture it will minimise your breakout.

So as you can see a serum is a very beneficial step to a skin care.

Product suggestions:

  • Palmer’s – Skin Perfecting Ultra Hydrating Serum.
  • Manuka Doctor – 24k Gold & Manuka Facial Oil.
  • Jojoba Company- 100% Natural Jojoba & Rosehip Oil.
  • SUKIN – Purely Ageless Botancial Hydration Booster.
  • A’Kin – Pure Radiance Certified Organic Rosehip Oil.

Step Four

Moisturiser!

Okay I know I’ve just said a serum is more beneficial than a moisturiser but this step is if you don’t use a serum definitely use a moisturiser after toning to help hydrate the skin.

Personally though I use a serum and a moisturiser because I have eczema and will apply a light layer as an extra layer of hydration for the skin.

Product suggestions:

  • Palmer’s – Coconut Oil Formula Facial Moisturiser.
  • A’Kin- Calming Sensitive Facial Moisturiser.
  • TRILOGY – Very Gentle Moisturising Cream.
  • SWISSE- Vitamin E Facial Moisturiser

I hope these steps and information was helpful and beneficial in helping you improve your skin care routine.

Have a wonderful day,

Lots of love
